Carl Emil Overbeck and the Bears start 2024 in SoCal before beginning the dual-match season in the Bay Area.
BERKELEY – The California men’s tennis team return to action in the New Year in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, slated to run Saturday through Monday at the Sherwood Country Club. The Golden Bears will compete with players from UCLA, USC and Texas A&M in singles and doubles.
The draws for the annual tournament have yet to be released.

Scouting the Bears
- Carl Emil Overbeck concluded the first half of the season when he won the singles title at the Jack Kramer Invitational (see below)
- Overbeck, a junior from Copenhagen, Denmark, also won four total singles matches (in qualifying, the main draw and the back draw) at the ITA All-American Championships in Oklahoma in the fall
- Overbeck is 10-4 in singles and 4-4 in doubles
- In the KPSF Open in San Francisco in October, freshman Timofey Stepanov won three matches to reach the singles semifinals
- Stepanov, who hails from Lugano, Switzerland, has a 7-6 singles record and a 6-4 doubles mark
- Derrick Chen – a Cambridge, England, product who garnered All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention as a freshman – reached the singles round of 16 at this year’s Battle in the Bay Classic and advanced to the singles quarterfinals in the KPSF Open
- Chen, a junior who went 3-1 in singles at the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge to close 2023, has records of 10-5 in singles and 5-5 in doubles
- Alex Chang, a Berkeley native who reached the singles quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships and went 2-1 in singles at the ITA All-American Championships, has an overall singles mark of 8-5 and is 5-4 in doubles
- Freshman Jonathan Irwanto advanced to the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Cal
- Irwanto, from Miami Shores, Florida, is 13-5 in singles and 7-4 in doubles
- Sophomore John Kim has records of 6-7 (singles) and 4-8 (doubles)
- Lucas Magnaudet, a senior from Paris, France, has a 4-4 singles record and 1-4 doubles record
- Mikey Wright, a junior from Berkeley, is 3-8 in singles…
