KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Women’s tennis team completed day three of playing in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships. The momentum was with the Vols’ as they landed two crucial victories and moved closer to championship matches. Tomorrow, Esther Adeshina and Sofia Cabezas will play in the doubles semifinals while Elza Tomase will compete in the singles semifinals.
Saturday morning started with doubles action to kick off the day. Adeshina and Cabezas punched their ticket into the doubles semifinals by beating Belmont’s Mariia Hlahola and Anastasiya Zholdakova in an 8-5 victory.
In singles play, the bracket winded down to 16 members. The Big Orange claimed three of those spots. Lauren Anzalotta, Elza Tomase and Alana Wolfberg each advanced to the quarterfinals. Anzalotta played stellar by taking down Anessa Lee from Vanderbilt – 6-1, 6-4. Wolfberg worked quickly to tally a 6-4 and 6-2 victory over Lipscomb’s Sasha Dobranos. Tomase added the Vols final win by defeating Purdue’s Carmen Gallardo Guevara in a three-set thriller. Tomase notched 6-7, 7-6 and 6-4 victories.
In the quarterfinals, Tomase was the lone Vol to capture a win. She rallied against Leonie Moeller from Memphis to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Wolfberg fell to Holly Staff from Vanderbilt, 6-3 and 6-2. Anzalotta was defeated by Bridget Stammel from Vanderbilt – 7-6, 6-3. Tomase also lost 6-2, 4-6 to Leonie from Memphis.
“Today was a mix of emotions,” said Head Coach Alison Ojeda. “Everyone on our team is improving, and that is something to make sure and talk about. With that said, our vision is to win an SEC Title. In order to do that, we have to play big time tennis in big time moments. We still have more tennis to play tomorrow, but post tourney, that will be our focus. Most importantly, it’s something we coaches look forward to. Our team is fun and eager to get after it.”
Tennessee returns to the courts tomorrow for the fourth day of main draw play. Singles start at 10 a.m. ET at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
