Alex Chang advanced to Saturday’s singles quarterfinals with two wins Friday on The Farm.
STANFORD – California men’s tennis junior Alex Chang won twice Friday to reach the singles quarterfinals as the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships began at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
The Berkeley native defeated Portland’s Nikola Keremedchiev, 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round of 32 and then beat Pacific’s Terence Das, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-0, in the round of 16. Chang faces Sacramento State’s Jan Silva in the quarterfinals Saturday at 3 p.m. PT.
Chang is one of eight Golden Bears competing at super regionals, though only five played Friday. The five included fifth-seeded Carl Emil Overbeck, who won his first-round match over Pacific’s Ran Amar, 6-1, 6-2, before falling in the round of 16. Freshman Tim Stepanov, who reached the semifinals of the recent KPSF Open tournament in San Francisco, beat Ryan Torres of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-3, in the round of 32 before also falling in the round of 16.
All eight Bears will compete Saturday. Two rounds of doubles and one round of singles will be played on the second day of the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships.
