AUBURN, Ala., – It was a clean sweep for Mississippi State men’s tennis on Friday.
The Bulldogs won all five of their matches on the second day of play at the ITA Southern Regional, including three victories by freshman Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes.
Ferrer Guimaraes started things off in the third round of singles qualifying with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Louisiana’s Oriol Fillat Gimenez. The former five-star recruit from Lakeland, Tennessee then downed Samford’s Sandeep Mohandoss 6-2, 6-2 to qualify for a spot in Saturday’s main draw.
Later in the afternoon, Ferrer Guimaraes teamed with Dusan Milanovic to earn a 6-3 win over Nazar Fedoryshyn and Izan Orgiles of North Alabama in the opening round of the doubles main draw.
In his first action of the fall, Nemanja Malesevic joined Marshall Landry to vanquish Vanja Dobrnjac and Lucius Soller of Jacksonville State 6-4. Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez also continued their success in the first round of doubles by defeating the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Fillat Gimenez and Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez 6-4.
All three MSU tandems are back on the courts for second-round play early Saturday morning. Landry and Malesevic meet Jack Clements and Rostislav Halfinger of South Alabama at 9 while Ferrer Guimaraes and Milanovic battle Logan Haga and Matei Palcau of Jacksonville State, also at 9. Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez are set to tangle with LSU’s Julien Penzlin and Alessio Vasquez at 9:45.
Ferrer Guimaraes opens the first round of main draw singles at noon against UAB’s Noah Malige while Jovanovic, Sanchez Martinez, Milanovic and Radomir Tomic await their second-round opponents after receiving a first-round bye.
At 2 p.m., No. 68 Jovanovic meets the winner of Joaquim Almeida (South Alabama) and Billy Suarez (Tulane), Sanchez Martinez faces Noah Schlagenhauf (Ole Miss) or Marcel Volz (New Orleans) and Tomic takes on either David Jeanne-Grandinot (Alabama State) or Luc Hoejimans (Tulane).
No. 36 Milanovic, the second-overall seed in the tournament, squares off against William Nolan (Auburn) or Rafael De Alba (Tulane) at 3:30 p.m.
