John Kim won a three-setter Friday to advance in the top singles draw in Davis.
DAVIS – The California men’s tennis team saw two Golden Bears – freshman Alex Aney and sophomore John Kim – advance into the singles quarterfinals with wins Friday in the Aggie Invitational at the Marya Welch Tennis Center at UC Davis.
In the singles top draw, Flight A, Kim defeated Pacific’s Terence Das, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16. In Flight B, the third-seeded Aney beat Sacramento State’s Jiri Novak, 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-2.
The Cal duo of Aney and Mikey Wright also bested Santa Clara’s Matthew Rodriguez and Lukas Maskow, 8-5, to reach the Flight A consolation doubles quarterfinals.
The three-day Aggie Invitational continues Saturday. Also on Saturday, another group of Bears begins play in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
