CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No.4 seed Illinois men’s tennis will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Big Ten Tournament. The Illini are slated to open the event in a quarterfinal matchup against No. 5 seed Nebraska on Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
The victor will advance to face the winner of Friday’s first quarterfinal match between No. 1-seeded Ohio State and the either No. 8 Penn State or No. 9 Indiana.at 10 a.m. CT.
The championship match is set for an 11 a.m. CT Start on Sunday.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION – Nebraska (13-19)
Head coach Sean Maymi has been at the helm of the Cornhuskers program since 2018 and sports a 44-68 overall record.
Freshman Lars Johann sports the best record on the team (14-12) and primarily plays in the No. 4 singles spot where he has compiled a 4-4 record.
Though graduate student William Gleason has a 11-12 overall record, he raked up a 5-1 record in the No. 5 singles spot.
History
In 2022, the Illini advanced to the semifinals with a 4-1 win over Wisconsin, before falling to eventual champion Michigan, 4-0.
Since 2009, the Fighting Illini rank second in the conference with three Big Ten Tournament championships, most recently adding a title in 2021 with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Ohio State.
Under head coach Brad Dancer, Illinois also won the tournament in 2012 and 2015.
