Utah to Battle Arizona in Opening Round of Pac-12 Tournament


The University of Utah women’s tennis team is heading to the Pac-12 tournament. Utah goes into the tournament as the No. 8 seed and are set to take on the No. 9 Seed Arizona Wednesday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m. (MT).

LAST TIME OUT

Utah went head-to-head with Colorado and came away with a 4-2 win over Colorado. The Utes were able to sweep the doubles point before Katya Townsend, Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez picked up wins in singles to secure the victory. 


ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS

Head coach Ric Mortera has been able to keep the Utes ranked for the second consecutive year. In the most recent ITA poll, Utah women’s tennis came in at 48th. .


HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA

Ric Mortera is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2022-23. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 45-40 overall record. This year he led Utah to the most Pac-12 wins in a season since 2015. 


During the 2021-22 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. The team started a program best 9-0, which included wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Minnesota, as well as Pac-12 opponent Washington State. He helped the Utes sign a top ten recruiting class nationally (No. 9) in 2022 and was named the ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year.



SCOUTING ARIZONA

Arizona is 16-12 this season and is currently 50th in the nation.They currently have no ranked singles players or doubles teams. The Wildcats have a 3-7 record in the Pac-12 and are coming off a 4-0 loss to Arizona State. 


PREVIOUS MATCHUP WITH ARIZONA

Earlier this season, the Utes took on the Wildcats and fell 4-3. Utah was able to sweep the doubles point but fell short in singles action with Barksdale and Lopez picking up the two singles wins for the Utes. 


UP NEXT

The winner of Arizona and Utah will take on the No. 1 seed Stanford on Thursday, April 27 at 1 p.m. (MT).
