Northwestern Treks to Michigan for Final Weekend of Regular Season


EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men’s tennis will travel to Michigan for the final week of regular season play this weekend. The Wildcats will battle No. 7 Michigan on Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m. CT before visiting No. 66 Michigan State on Sunday, April 23 at 11 a.m. CT. 

Last weekend, Northwestern closed out its final regular season homestand with three wins, extending its win streak to eight games. The ‘Cats defeated No. 45 Nebraska 4-3 behind wins from Trice Pickens (#4 Singles), Gleb Blekher (#6 Singles), Steven Forman (#1 Singles), and Ivan Yatsuk (#2 Singles) on Friday.

The Wildcats celebrated Senior Day with a 4-1 win over No. 51 Wisconsin in their first match on Sunday. NU claimed the doubles point behind a pair of 6-0 wins from Simen Bratholm/Steven Forman (#1 Doubles) and Yatsuk/Blekher (#2 Doubles). The ‘Cats finished off the Badgers behind wins from Presley Thieneman (#5 Singles), Blekher (#6 Singles), and Yatsuk (# 2 Singles).

Northwestern closed out the weekend with a 4-0 sweep of Illinois State to move to 5-0 against in-state opponents this season. NU secured the doubles point behind wins from Steven Forman/Felix Nordby (#2 Doubles) Trice Pickens/Natan Spear (#3 Doubles). In singles action, Ivan Yatsuk (#1 Singles), Natan Spear (#6 Singles), and Trice Pickens (#2 Singles) clinched the match for the ‘Cats.

Northwestern will face No. 7 Michigan in the penultimate match of the regular season for the Wildcats. Northwestern fell 4-0 to Michigan in Ann Arbor earlier this season as a part of the ITA’s Kickoff Weekend. The Wolverines and Wildcats are currently tied for second place in the conference, with both teams sitting at 6-1 in league play. Five Wolverines appear in the ITA Singles Rankings, led by Ondrej Styler at No. 7. The doubles pairing of Gavin Young and Andrew Fenty rank No. 8 in the ITA Doubles Rankings.

In the final match of the regular season, the Wildcats will square off with the No. 66 Michigan State Spartans. Winners of three in a row, Spartans are 10-11 with a 3-4 record in conference play.
