Ozan Baris Named Big Ten Men's Tennis Player of the Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Michigan State men’s tennis freshman Ozan Baris has been named Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league Wednesday.

Baris earns the honor after going 4-0 last weekend, earning a record of 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and doubles in MSU’s wins at Purdue and Indiana.

The Okemos, Michigan native led the Spartans to their first league road win at Purdue on April 14, defeating the Boilermakers’ Daniel Labrador, 6-3, 7-5. He also earned a 7-5 win over Labrador and Tomasz Dudek alongside doubles partner Anthony Pero

Baris helped the Spartans to an undefeated weekend following the Purdue match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Indiana’s Patrick Fletchall on April 16. He also picked up a 6-3 win with Pero in doubles against Fletchall and Ilya Tirapolsky.

The rookie owns a 9-8 record in singles this spring and holds a 5-1 doubles record with Pero. He also posts a 6-1 record, including 5-0 against nationally ranked opponents, with sophomore Max Sheldon. The pair currently ranks sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association doubles rankings, the highest-ever ranking by a doubles team in program history. He also ranks 41st in the latest ITA singles rankings.

Baris is the first Spartan Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week since Nick Williams on March 24, 2021. He shares the honor with Illinois’ Karlis Ozolins.

The Spartans return to action this weekend with home duals against No. 25 Illinois (April 21) and No. 26 Northwestern (April 23).
