Women's Tennis Falls At Second-Ranked Texas A&M


COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Mississippi State women’s tennis concluded its regular season road match with a loss to second-ranked Texas A&M 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.

MSU fought the Aggies for the doubles point to start things off. Sydney Hrehor and Alexandra Mikhailuk defeated the Texas A&M duo of Jeanette Mireles and Daria Smetannikov 6-3 to even things out in doubles and turned the attention Court 1 to decide which team received the early momentum.  

Emmanouela Antonaki and Dharani Niroshan fought valiantly against the 20th-ranked tandem of Salma Ewing and Jayci Goldsmith but ultimately dropped a 6-4 decision.   

In singles, Antonaki, Niroshan, Mikhailuk and Gia Cohen all dropped matches to ranked opponents. No. 104 Antonaki faced second-ranked Mary Stoiana. Texas A&M’s Stoiana took the first set 6-2 while the second set went back and forth between the two. Ultimately, Stoiana came out on top 7-5 to take the match.

Niroshan was downed by 50th-ranked Mia Kupres 6-3, 6-1. Mikhailuk lost to No. 111 Jayci Goldsmith 6-2, 6-2 while Cohen fell 6-3, 6-4 to No. 77 Ewing.

Aggie Mireles defeated Maria Rizzolo 6-4, 6-2 while Emily Surcey dropped to Gianna Pielet 6-2, 6-1.

The Aggies were the 10th opponent the Bulldogs have faced this season that have been ranked. Five of the teams that MSU has faced have been ranked among the top 25.

Mississippi State will close out its regular season at home next weekend hosting No. 5 Georgia on Friday at 4 p.m. and 15th-ranked Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m.
