COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Down 3-1 at Maryland, Illinois Women’s Tennis battled all the way back to secure a 4-3 victory on Sunday from the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland. The Illini won the doubles point before Maryland earned the first three singles decisions. Down the stretch, UI saw Violeta Martinez, Ashley Yeah and Kasia Treiber all win third sets to secure the come-from-behind win.
With the win, Illinois climbed to 15-6 on the season including a 6-1 record in Big Ten play. Maryland moves to 14-6 overall and 3-4 with Sunday’s decision. The Illini are now 4-4 in matches against ranked teams this season.
Illinois’ No. 2 doubles duo of Josie Frazier and Ashley Yeah were the first pair off the court with a 6-2 win. After working together in the fall, Frazier and Yeah are up to a 4-1 record together on the season.
No. 15 Kate Duong and Megan Heuser also secured a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point victory for Illinois. The duo has now won 14-straight decisions and is up to a 23-3 overall record, 14-1 dual mark and 6-0 reading in Big Ten play.
The Illini have now won six-straight doubles points on the season and are up to 13 overall.
Maryland would take four of the first sets in singles play before Illinois responded by winning two second sets and three third frames.
The Terps evened the match at 1-1 with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Duong held a 4-2 lead in the first set and 3-2 advantage in set two but neither lead would hold. Maryland would follow that with a win at No. 3 for a 2-1 lead in the match. After winning her first set 6-2, Heuser fell 7-5, 6-2 in the following two frames to drop the match.
A straight-set win at No. 4 singles put Maryland up 3-1 on the match.
Violeta Martinez picked up her second Big Ten singles win in as many matches with a three-set win at No. 6 on Sunday. After falling 4-6 in the first frame, the freshman battled back for 6-1 and 6-4 wins, respectively, to pull Illinois within 3-2. Martinez is now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
From there, No. 73 Ashley Yeah earned a three-set victory over her counterpart at No. 2 singles to even the match at 3-3. She won 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-5 and is up to 16-9 on the season and 5-2 in Big Ten play.
