Women’s Tennis Edged at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – The UCLA women’s tennis team dropped a 4-2 conference decision to Arizona State Saturday afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Complex. The day’s final two matches were in third sets when the result was clinched.

The Bruins (9-6, 4-4 Pac-12) earned the doubles point before Kimmi Hance added to the team’s score in singles play. Sedona Gallagher clinched the overall win for the Sun Devils (14-5, 4-3), backing up efforts by Marianna Argyrokastriti, Rachel Hanford and Domenika Turkovic.

The combination of Gallagher and Giulia Morlet gave Arizona State an early advantage in doubles play with its 6-2 decision over Ava Catanzarite and Sasha Vagramov on Court 2. UCLA answered on the top court, where No. 12 Hance and Elise Wagle outlasted No. 27 Turkovic and Patricija Spaka by a 6-4 margin. Hance/Wagle previously beat Spaka/Turkovic at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships and now have six victories against national-ranked pairs. With all eyes on Court 3, Bruins Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and Fangran Tian kept their record unblemished and clinched the doubles point for the second time. They edged Argyrokastriti and Chelsea Fontenel 7-5 Saturday.

The Sun Devils answered in singles play, taking five of six initial sets. First to finish was Court 3, where Turkovic bested No. 122 Catanzarite 6-2, 6-0. Argyrokastriti followed her teammate’s example on Court 4, giving Arizona State the lead with her 6-1, 6-2 victory opposite Vagramov. Hanford then got the better of Lutkemeyer in a 6-3,…
