TUCSON, Ariz. – It was a huge win for Arizona Men’s Tennis today defeating Pepperdine 6-1 in a windy battle on Friday, Feb. 3. The Cats took the doubles point and five of six singles points in front of a roaring crowd at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
The Wildcats secured the doubles point after about an hour of competition with courts one and two holding their leads throughout the entire match. Stepping in for Herman Hoeyeraal, who is competing at the Davis Cup in Norway, at one doubles alongside Jonas Ziverts was freshman Jay Friend. The duo bested the 34th ranked doubles pair in the nation Daniel De Jonge and Tim Zeitvogel 6-2, gathering many of their points off of slick drop shots. Colton Smith and Jared Horwood finalized the doubles point with a volley winner from the Canadian, defeating Max Wuelfing and Maxi Homberg 6-4.
Arizona put on an absolute battle of a match against Pepperdine with all six singles matches splitting sets. First off the court was #78 Friend who defeated Pietro Fellin 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Next was #19 Ziverts coming back from a 1-5 deficit in the third to win the match against #94 Tim Zeitvogel 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. And clinching the match for the Wildcats was #85 Smith with a huge 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over #31 De Jonge. #117 Gustaf Strom extended Arizona’s lead after he defeated Maxi Homberg 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Men’s Tennis is ranked No. 17 in the ITA rankings and their spring season record now stands at 4-1 where they are undefeated at home. Next up for the Cats is another home match against University of San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 12 p.m. MST.
