SAN DIEGO, Calif./TEMPE, Ariz. – Katja Wiersholm and Jessica Alsola won in straight sets Saturday in San Diego to advance to the consolation doubles final of the ITA National Fall Championships and give the Cal women’s tennis duo a chance at winning a second title in just under three weeks.
In the semifinals at the Barnes Tennis Center, Wiersholm and Alsola defeated Kentucky’s Carlota Molina and Elizabeth Stevens, 6-3, 6-3. The Golden Bears will face Arizona State’s Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkov in in the final on Sunday at 12 p.m.
The Cal tandem captured the doubles crown in its previous tournament – the ITA Northwest Regional Championships – on Oct. 18 at Stanford.
While the Bears set up a meeting with the Sun Devils in San Diego, another group of Bears competed in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Arizona. Cal junior Hannah Viller Moeller won again in singles on Saturday in Tempe, beating Ohio State’s Lucia Marzal Martinez, 6-3, 6-3, and the duo of Valentina Ivanov and Erin Richardson bested the Buckeyes’ Madeline Atway and Danielle Wilson, 7-5, in doubles.
Fall nationals and the Arizona State tournament conclude on Sunday to close the first half of the season for the Bears.
