TUSCALOOSA, Ala.– The Alabama men’s tennis team concluded day one with a doubles win Friday at the SEC/Big 12 Challenge at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Also competing this weekend, UA’s Joao Ferreira captured a win at the Country Club of Birmingham Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.

SEC/Big 12 Challenge
Doubles
- No. 33 Filip Planinsek and German Samofalov defeated Oklahoma’s (OU) Baptiste Anselmo and Justin Schlageter in the opening match of the tournament
- The UA duo fought hard to take a 7-6 (8) win
Singles
- Roan Jones battled but fell short to Conner Thomson of South Carolina 6-2, 6-4
- UA freshmen Matias Ponce De Leon held his opponent from OU, Baptiste Anselmo, to a 6-6 first set score, before falling in the tiebreak 7-3
- Ponce De Leon then lost in the second set 6-3 to fall in the match
- Filip Planinsek was defeated in 6-4 mirroring set to OU’s Justin Schlageter
- The Tide will continue play Saturday at 1 p.m. CT
CCB Invitational
- Joao Ferreira opened Friday’s match with a win over Olimjon Nabiev from Southern Miss
- The UA sophomore won the first set 6-4, before falling in the second set 6-1 to force a third round
- Ferreira secured the win in the final set at 7-6 (4)
- In the second round of the tournament, Ferreira took on East Tennessee State’s Thiago Pernas, where he fell 6-1, 6-2
- Ferreira will play in the consolation round Saturday at 12 p.m. CT
