CARY, N.C. – The prequalifying round at the ITA All-American Championships is complete for the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team as Celia-Belle Mohr advanced to the qualifying round to highlight Sunday’s action.
After a convincing straight-set singles victory a day ago, Mohr was again dominant on Sunday. She began the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Oklahoma’s Alexandra Pisereva. She followed up with another straight-set performance, taking down UCLA’s Kimmi Hance, 6-0, 6-1. Mohr moves on to the qualifying round scheduled for Oct. 3-4.
“Really awesome to see Celia win her first three rounds and advance today to the qualifying draw at her first All-Americans,” Vanderbilt head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “She is improving with each match, and I’m excited she will have the opportunity to play more quality tennis here. Bridget (Stammel) played a very good first match and came very close to getting through in her final round this afternoon but credit to Komar who came up with some big shot making to pull it out. I’m also happy for Sonya (Macavei) who was down 3-1 and 5-3 in each set and won both 6-4 7-5 to pick up a ‘W’ in her singles consolation. I’m eager to see Holly (Staff), Anessa (Lee) and our two doubles teams compete tomorrow in the qualifying rounds.”
Bridget Stammel continued her impressive play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sedona Gallagher of Arizona State in her first match of the day. The freshman then played a tight match with LSU’s Anastasiya Komar, falling 7-5, 6-4.
In the consolation singles round, freshman Sonya Macavei was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Oklahoma State’s Raquel Gonzalez.
The Oct. 3-4 qualifying round will feature singles action with Mohr, Anessa Lee and Holly Staff and doubles play with the pairings of Mohr/Stammel and Lee/Macavei.
