Debru Joins Illini Men’s Tennis Program

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –  Illinois men’s tennis head coach Brad Dancer announced Monday (July 25) the addition of Georgia transfer Mathis Debru to the Fighting Illini program for the 2022-23 season.

“Mathis is going to be a tremendous addition for the Fighting Illini program,” Dancer said. “He’s an extremely intelligent young man that has big visions for his future. He’s been through struggles in the past with injuries, and now is stronger because of those times. He’s got an explosive game that will help him be successful in both singles and doubles play for the Illini. Our fans will enjoy his passion and attacking game style.”

Debru competed for the Bulldogs as a freshman in 2021-22, and joins the Illini with three seasons of collegiate eligibility remaining. While at Georgia, he went 7-9 overall in singles and 3-2 in doubles play, and won back-to-back matches to earn a spot in the main draw of the 2021 ITA Southeast Regional.

Before beginning his collegiate career, Debru was a two-time singles champion on the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit. The Grenoble, France, native started playing national tournaments at the age of 13 in European junior tournaments in the U14 age group. He reached a career high ITF Junior ranking of 186 in Oct. 2020.
