MADISON, Wisc. – On day three of the B1G Individual Championships, the Badgers powered through the Round of 16 but faced challenges in the semifinals.
In a tightly contested doubles semi-finals, Michael Minasyan and Collin Beduhn battled against Carpico/Filin from Ohio State. While the Badgers fought hard, they were bested by their Buckeye opponents, 6-4.
Patrik Meszaros showed up and showed out yet again with an outstanding performance to take down the No. 1 seed from Michigan. After a swift 6-4 first-set win, Benjamin Kittay fought back against Meszaros to bring the second set to a tiebreak. Meszaros got the best of his opponent to get the match as well as the upset. Similarly, Michael Minasyan flew through his set against his Ohio State challenger. 6-2. The second set was closely contested and was brought to a tiebreak. Minasyan eventually overcame to win the second set and the match. In the quarterfinals, both Michael Minasyan and Patrik Meszaros’ matches stretched to third-set tiebreakers. While Meszaros faced a tough defeat at 10-3, Minasyan fought before narrowly losing 11-9.
In the consolation singles matches, the Badgers found success. Edouard Aubert rebounded from a second-set deficit of 0-6 to clinch the tiebreaker 10-6. Matthew Fullerton, despite an earlier fall in the main draw, claimed a decisive victory in the R16 consolation by bouncing back from a lost first set to win the next 6-1 and the tiebreaker 10-8. After initial setbacks, Sachiv Kumar, Oliver Olsson, and Collin Beduhn all rallied impressively in their second matches to secure wins.
The final day of the tournament begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. with main draw singles semi-finals, followed by singles consolation play at 9 a.m.
