Williams Powers on at ITA Sectional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Cooper Williams continued his march at the ITA Sectional Championship on Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill. The sophomore advanced to the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals with two more victories. 

Williams, the No. 2 seed in the singles bracket, upended Cornell’s Nathan Mao, 6-2, 6-3, in the Round of 16. Tied 1-1 in the second set, Williams ripped off a hold-break-hold run to take control at 4-1 and cruise to the victory. Williams moves on to face Ioannis Xilas of Wake Forest at 11 a.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals. 

In doubles, Williams and Theo Winegar topped Virginia’s Mans Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich, 6-4, 6-2. After trailing 3-0 in the opening set, the Blue Devil duo stormed back to even the set a 3-3. The Cavaliers won the next game, but Duke went on a hold-break-hold march to take the first set. Tied 1-1 in the second set, the Blue Devils went on to capture five of the set’s final six games to secure the win.

Williams and Winegar face North Carolina’s Patrick Schoen and Logan Zapp in the quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
