British tennis No. 1 Katie Boulter beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the US Open second round on Tuesday.
Sasnovich won a tense first set in hot conditions in New York, before Boulter regained her composure to dominate the second and third sets.
After her slow start, Boulter was pleased with how she responded to recover and advance to the next round.
“It’s not easy coming out here to play your first round against someone who has been top 30 – she knows how to play tennis,” Boulter told Sky Sport.
“I know it would be a battle, she’s played three matches on these courts. I feel I came out really well but she responded quickly in the first set.
“I tried to reset and play a better second and third and proud I managed to stay in there and bring a good level to the court.”
In the men’s draw, fellow British No. 1 Jack Draper eased into the second round, comfortably beating China’s Zhang Zhizhen in a walkover.
Draper raced ahead, dominating the first two sets 6-3, 6-0, before Zhizhen withdrew while Draper was up 4-0 in the third set with a leg injury.
World No. 25 Draper looked in ominous form, firing down five aces on his way to the second round.
