KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The fifth-ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team closed out non-conference competition with two wins over The Citadel on Monday at Barksdale Stadium
MATCH 1: Tennessee 7, The Citadel 0
In doubles play, Nicolas Kobelt and Johannus Monday cruised to a 6-1 victory to defeat The Citadel’s Teo Cariov and Ted Bagwell on court two. Younes Lalami and Filip Apltauer followed on court one, topping the Bulldogs’ Hayden Shoemake and Sebastian Kamieniecki, 6-4, and recording their sixth win as a pair this season. Chris Li and James Newton rounded out the doubles victories with a 7-5 win over Lucas Robins and Noah Van Dyke at the No. 3 spot.
Apltauer was dominant in singles action, serving out a double bagel to Will Bush on court six. Monday, ranked seventh nationally, took down Shoemake in a decisive 6-2, 6-2 effort atop the lineup. Kobelt, making his collegiate debut, sealed the Big Orange win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Kamieniecki at the No. 2 spot. The Vols jumped to a 5-0 lead thanks to Newton, who posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bagwell on court five. Lalami took his first set over Van Dyke, 6-3, before dropping the second set, 4-6. He battled, however, to claim the match in a 10-6 third-set tiebreaker, marking his 40th career dual match win. Li rounded out singles competition, registering a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Cariov at the No. 3 spot.
