RALEIGH – Fourth-ranked NC State women’s tennis (8-1, 2-0 ACC) battled past 19th-ranked Georgia Tech (7-3, 2-1 ACC) on Friday afternoon to beat them 4-3.
The win over the Yellow Jackets was the first home victory over the team since 1998 as they lead the series over the Wolfpack 33-15.
Doubles’ action was swiftly succeeded by the Wolfpack. On court one, Diana Shnaider and Alana Smith kicked off the festivities with the first 6-2 doubles win for the team. Shortly after, Sophie Abrams and Abigail Rencheli clinched the doubles point on court three with a 6-2 lead to put NC State in the lead. Play by Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki on court two was abandoned.
While Shnaider fell to her top-15 ranked opponent on court one, Rencheli became victorious in her first set as she fought through a tiebreaker 7-6 (9-7) to take the lead. Shortly after, Abrams fell on court four in two sets.
Gina Dittmann found the first singles win on court six a close first set and a commanding second set finishing 7-5, 6-3. Rencheli snagged the second singles win for the team to put the team back on top 3-2.
After dropping her first set in a tiebreaker, Rajecki controlled her opponent in the second set 6-2 to force a third set finishing 6-3. Rajecki’s win on court three clinched the team win for the Wolfpack as the score advanced to 4-2.
Finally, Smith fell on court one in three sets to finish the match and give Georgia Tech their third and final point.
