Katja Wiersholm won twice Saturday to advance in singles and won once in doubles to move onto Sunday at regionals.
STANFORD – Four Golden Bears advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, and the California women’s tennis team’s top two pairs reached the doubles round of 16.
Two of the Bears who won twice in singles Saturday to move into Sunday’s quarterfinals will face each other, as the fourth-seeded and 98th-ranked Katja Wiersholm will place the sixth-seeded Hannah Viller Moeller at noon PT. Also advancing was Cal’s Berta Passola Folch, who beat Portland’s Alaia Rubio Perez, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, in the round of 16 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Stanford’s second-seeded and 21st-ranked Alexandra Yepifanova also at noon on Sunday. Freshman Bear Mao Mushika, seeded eighth, bested Stanford’s India Houghton 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the round of 16 to book a spot opposite the Cardinal’s ninth-seeded and 118th-ranked Valencia Xu in another noon quarterfinal.
The latter meeting could have been a Bear vs. Bear match, but Xu upset Cal’s top-seeded and 47th-ranked Jessica Alsola, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 16.
Alsola will see Xu again at regionals. The top-seeded and ninth-ranked duo of Alsola and Wiersholm upended Washington’s Catherine Gagnon and Yolanda Lin, 8-4, in Saturday’s round of 32 to set up a round of 16 clash with Stanford’s Xu and Houghton at 10 a.m. Sunday. The seventh-seeded Mushika and Viller Moeller – who knocked off San Jose State’s Rozalina Youseva and Cheuk Ying Shek, 8-4, on Saturday – join their teammates in the round of 16 when they face Washington’s Melissa Sakar and Sarah-Maude Fortin at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The ITA regionals at Stanford end on Tuesday.
