Alex Chang beat the top seed at ITA regionals Sunday to advance to Monday’s singles semifinals in Seattle.
SEATTLE – California men’s tennis placed three Golden Bears – Alex Chang, Theo Dean and Carl Emil Overbeck – in the singles semifinals and the duo of Dean and Overbeck advanced to the doubles semifinals Sunday at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. The singles results mean that at least one Bear – Chang or Overbeck – will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship in November, as the two singles finalists at northwest regionals qualify for the national tournament.
Additionally, the regional doubles champions qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
After eighth-seeded and 123rd-ranked Chang defeated Stanford’s Nico Godsick 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in Sunday’s round of 16, he upset the Cardinal’s top-seeded and 32nd-ranked Henry von der Schulenberg 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Chang will face Overbeck in the semifinals. Third-seeded and 56th-ranked Overbeck bested Pacific’s Ran Amar 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the round of 16 and then topped Washington’s Dzianis Zharyn 6-3, 6-4.
Dean – seeded second and ranked 44th – started his Sunday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over teammate Ethan Schiffman before beating Washington’s Nedim Suko 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. He’ll next face the Huskies’ 108th-ranked Cesar Bouchelaghem in the semifinals.
In the doubles quarterfinals, third-seeded and 25th-ranked Dean and Overbeck defeated Portland’s Nikola Keremedchiev and Stefan Skobelev 8-4 to advance to Monday, when they’ll take on Washington’s top-seeded and 10th-ranked Bouchelaghem and Zharyn. The Huskies beat Cal’s seventh-seeded Derrick Chen and Timofey Stepanov 8-4 on Sunday. Also, Cal’s second-seeded and 13th-ranked Chang and Mikey Wright fell to Gonzaga’s Giovanni Branchetti and Jay Fairclough 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
The ITA Northwest Regional Championships come to a close Tuesday.
