ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 17 Tennessee women’s team concluded SEC Championship play on Saturday afternoon, as the Big Orange fell, 4-0, in a semifinal matchup with Georgia. The defeat snapped the Lady Volunteers’ seven-match winning streak and marked the third consecutive year they have fallen to Georgia one match shy of the Championship.
Four-seeded Tennessee (18-7, 9-4 SEC) downed top-seeded Georgia’s (19-4, 12-1 SEC) doubles pairs in the regular season contest, but came up short Saturday. The No. 12-ranked pair of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase fell to the No. 13-ranked duo Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova in a 3-6 result. The No.-77 ranked tandem of Alana Wolfberg and Esther Adeshina dropped a 4-6 decision against No. 49 Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant. The pair of Lauren Anzalotta and Catherine Aulia were down, 4-5, against Anastiia Lopata and Mell Reasco before abandoning their match due to the clinch.
In singles, Tennessee was unable to claw back against the Bulldogs. No. 18 Cabezas fell in a 1-6, 1-6 decision against No. 20 Dasha Vidmanova. Adeshina yielded a 3-6, 3-6 defeat versus Guillermina Grant. Aulia dropped the final singles affair to Anatasiia Lopata, 1-6, 1-6.
Three matches went unfinished. No. 123 Tomase held a 6-2, 2-4 lead on No. 40 Alexndra Vecic. Wolfberg worked a 2-6, 4-4 contest versus No. 96 Mell Reasco. Anzalotta filed a 4-6, 3-0 score against No. 76 Mai Nirundorn.
