SEATTLE – Coming off a big Pac-12 opening upset of Utah, the Huskies picked up another Pac-12 Player of the Week honor today, as sophomore Dzianis Zharyn earned the first win of his career. Zharyn got ranked wins in both singles and doubles against the Utes, plus a victory at Hawaii earlier in the week.
Washington outlasted the then-No. 31 Utes in a 4-3 thriller on Sunday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, snapping Utah’s 14-match win streak. Zharyn, the native of Gomel, Belarus, defeated 85th-ranked Franco Capalbo, 6-3, 7-5, for UW’s first singles win of the day.
UW also got the doubles point against Utah, which proved to be crucial. At the No. 1 spot, Zharyn and Cesar Bouchelaghem upset 26th-ranked Trhac/Bugarikj, 6-3. The Huskies then got a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot from Han-Chih Lin and Jim Hendrikx to take the doubles point.
In the nonconference finale last Tuesday in Hawaii, Zharyn had two 6-0 set wins sandwiched around a 3-6 second set, to beat Axel Labrunie in the 5-2 Husky win.
This is the second Pac-12 Player of the Week this season for the Huskies. Bouchelaghem earned the honor on Feb. 24.
Washington has won three straight and six of its past seven to get to 10-4, and continues Pac-12 play this Saturday against Oregon in Seattle at 1 p.m.
