Zack Warren Leaves Cal For BYU

Among the triumphs that Cal women’s tennis earned during Zack Warren’s tenure in Berkeley included an ITA national team championship and back-to-back Pac-12 Conference titles.


BERKELEY – After spending nine years on the California women’s tennis coaching staff that featured championships and other numerous accolades with the Golden Bears, associate head coach Zack Warren is leaving Cal to become the men’s tennis head coach at BYU, Cal head coach Amanda Augustus announced Friday.
 
“I am very excited for Zack on this next step on his coaching journey as the head coach at his alma mater, as they transition into a Power 5 program,” Augustus said. “I am proud of all we accomplished in our nine years working together, and wish him and his beautiful family nothing but the best in Provo. We will be cheering him on from Berkeley.”
 
“It has been an absolute honor working with Amanda over the last nine years,” Warren said. “I have so many great memories coaching alongside her. I am humbled at the opportunity to have coached world-class student-athletes on a daily basis. Special thanks to (senior associate AD) Josh Hummel, the administration and the entire Cal athletic staff for their unwavering support of the women’s tennis program.
 
“I’ll carry so many incredible memories with me as I make the move to BYU and will always cheer and support the Golden Bears!”
 
Warren played tennis for BYU from 2004-06 and his wife, Angela, ran track for the Cougars, for whom she was a three-time All-American. An assistant coach for BYU men’s tennis from 2009-12, he was named the ITA Mountain Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. A San Francisco Bay Area native from Novato, Warren first joined Cal Athletics as the volunteer assistant coach for the Cal men’s tennis team in the 2012-13 season. He joined the Cal women’s program in 2014-15.
 
A three-time ITA Northwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year while at Cal (2013, 2021, 2022), Warren helped to lead the Bears to their first national team title in 2016, when they captured the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship, and claim Pac-12 Conference championships in 2021 and 2022.
