Yu Claims Title at ITA Summer Masters Series at Wake Forest


WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Duke women’s tennis sophomore Eleana Yu competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Summer Masters Series at Wake Forest this past weekend and claimed the singles title in Winston-Salem.
 
Yu, who hails from Mason, Ohio, won five matches over three days en route to winning the singles championship. 
 
On Friday in the first round, Yu totaled a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Katya Shepherd Johnson and then cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Maria Rizzolo in the round of 16.  In her second match on Saturday, Yu totaled a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Sankavi Gownder. 
 
Yu went up against Ellie Pittman in the semifinals on Sunday morning and posted a 6-3, 6-1 win.  In the championship match, Yu faced Alejandra Cruz and totaled a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 victory to claim the title. 
 
After being injured for most of the spring season for the Blue Devils, rising senior Ellie Coleman competed in Winston-Salem as well and advanced to the quarterfinals.  Coleman, a native of Midland, Michigan, opened play by knocking off Ava Bruno, 6-1, 6-1.  She then posted a 6-4, 6-0 win against Alana Boyce, before falling to Cruz, 5-7, 3-6.
