COLUMBUS, Ohio – Alice Xu and Kasia Treiber earned wins on the singles courts as the Illinois women’s tennis team fell 4-2 at No. 15 Ohio State on Sunday. The match took place from OSU’s Ty Tucker Tennis Center and concluded the regular season for both squads.
Illinois moved to 16-8 overall with Sunday’s result, including an 8-3 mark in Big Ten matches. Ohio State is now 17-6 overall and 10-1 in Big Ten play.
Ohio State claimed the doubles point to open action. The Buckeyes took wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles while Kasia Treiber and McKenna Schaefbauer went unfinished at No. 2.
The Buckeyes pushed their lead to 3-0 before Illinois got on the board. Treiber battled to a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles for her fourth straight victory. She junior owns a 16-13 overall record on the campaign, which includes a 13-8 mark in duals, and 8-3 reading in Big Ten play.
Xu followed with a win of her own to pull Illinois within 3-2. The freshman won her first set 6-3. She trailed 4-5 in set two before flipping the score for a 6-5 lead and ultimately won the frame 7-6 (5). The win marked Xu’s eighth straight victory as she climbed to 12-4 overall, 8-0 in duals, and 7-0 in Big Ten matches.
OSU picked up its fourth point at No. 1 singles to secure the 4-2 win.
Next up for the Illini is the Big Ten Tournament from April 24-28 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
