TULSA, Okla. – California men’s tennis seniors Alex Chang and Mikey Wright defeated Vanderbilt’s Henry Ruger and Hugo Coquelin on Thursday to reach the doubles quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships and move one step closer to qualifying for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
Wright and Chang, ranked 13th, beat the 86th-ranked Ruger and Coquelin 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16. The Golden Bears next face Baylor’s 26th-ranked Devin Badenhorst and Zsombor Velcz on Friday at a time to be announced. A victory would mean berths in the All-American semifinals and in the NCAA doubles tournament in November.
Theo Dean, the 44th-ranked Bear who beat the nation’s top-ranked singles player Wednesday, lost in the second round to TCU’s 39th-ranked Lui Maxted 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-3 in the main draw round of 32. Dean moves into the consolation draw Friday, when he’ll play doubles partner Carl Emil Overbeck at 8 a.m. PT. Overbeck beat Baylor’s Badenhorst 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of consolation action Thursday.
In the doubles consolation draw, Overbeck and Dean fell to Ohio State’s 19th-ranked Aidan Kim and Alexander Bernard 6-0, 4-6, 10-5.
