KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Coming off back-to-back appearances in the NCAA semifinals, the Tennessee men’s tennis team brings back an experienced roster for the 2023 dual season. Tennessee head coach Chris Woodruff announced the team’s full spring slate Tuesday.
Having finished the 2022 spring season ranked No. 6 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s team rankings, Tennessee’s 2022-23 squad is compiled of 11 individuals—seven returning from the 2021-22 roster and four incoming transfers.
Tennessee will face nine top-25 opponents (according to the ITA final 2022 team rankings), including six top-10 foes this spring.
Prior to the official commencement of the dual match season, Tennessee will host the Orange & White scrimmage on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the Goodfriend Tennis Center, beginning at 4 p.m. ET. Admission to the event and all regular season matches this season is free.
The Vols’ season-opening match comes against Charlotte in Knoxville on Jan. 8, followed by another home contest versus Texas Tech on Jan. 9.
A home doubleheader against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech on Jan. 14 sets up an invigorating road weekend at Michigan (Jan. 19) and Wake Forest (Jan. 22), both of which finished the 2022 spring season in the ITA Top 10.
On Jan. 27-28, Tennessee will host the ITA Kickoff Weekend for a second consecutive season and for the third time in four years. Oklahoma, Charlotte and Louisiana will travel to Rocky Top for the Friday-Saturday event, with the winner securing a spot in the ITA Indoor National Championships, to be held at the XS Tennis Village in Chicago, Illinois, Feb. 17-20.
Following the ITA Kickoff Weekend is a home dual match versus TCU, the 2022 ITA Indoor National Champions, on Thursday, Feb. 2. The matchup marks the fifth between the Vols and Horned Frogs since 2019, with the teams splitting the previous four meetings. Two of the nine all-time matches in the series’ history came in 2022. Fourth-ranked Tennessee defeated No. 5 TCU, 4-3 on the road early in the dual season to ascend to the No. 1 national ranking for the first time since 2011. The Horned Frogs later took a 4-1 decision in the ITA Indoor National Championship match a month later.
That marquee match is to be followed by a road tilt at Columbia on Feb. 11 in New York City. A home doubleheader against The Citadel on Feb. 25 is set to close nonconference action.
