SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s tennis team wrapped up another weekend of fall competition with undefeated performances from several Utes at the SMU Invitational.
In doubles action, Kaila Barksdale and Emma Valletta went undefeated in their draw. First the Ute duo defeated Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Maria Santos from Kansas State with a 6-1 score. Barksdale and Valletta then matched up against Iva Sepa and Gabriela Cortez from Houston in the semifinals where the Ute duo picked up another 6-1 victory to put them into the finals.
In the finals of the doubles draw, Barksdale and Valletta defeated SMU’s June Bjork and Caroline Mcginley with a 6-4 score to go undefeated on the weekend.
Barksdale continued her hot streak with three consecutive wins to win her singles draw. First, Barksdale defeated Iva Sepa from Houston with 6-1, 7-6 scores. She then defeated Kansas State’s Veronika Kulhava 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to advance her to the finals where she came away with victory after Chogsomjav withdrew.
Sara Akid also won her singles draw by going undefeated. She first picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over UTA’s Ioana Dumitrescu. In the semifinal round, Akid defeated Sophie Schouten 6-4, 6-4. Akid defeated Santos 6-2, 6-4 in the finals to claim the draw title.
Emma Kamper ended up getting a win in the back draw of singles when she defeated Ana Paula Jiminez from UTA with scores of 6-1, 7-6, 10-8. Valletta also picked up a win in the back draw by defeating UTA’s Nika Novikova 6-2, 6-0.
