Women’s Tennis to host annual Thunderbird Invitational this Weekend


Tempe, Ariz. – Sun Devil Women’s Tennis is slated to host five teams for the annual Thunderbird Invitational at Whiteman Tennis Center this Friday, November 8 to Sunday November 10.

Arizona, California, Kansas State, Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon will join Arizona State for the weekend.

The matches will begin at 10 a.m. MST on Friday, beginning with doubles, followed by singles matches. Play will then continue at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday’s matches will begin at 9 a.m. MST to round-out the weekend. 

Admission is free for all three days of play, parking is available in front of Whiteman Tennis Center and additional parking can be found in Lot 59 and nearby parking garages.

No live stream will be available throughout the three days of action, but fans can follow along through the tournament homepage.

The four Sun Devils that are competing will be Ada Piestrzynska, Karsyn Evans, Aya Nupbay and Emilija Tverijonaite. Tverijonaite qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship after finishing third at the ITA Southwest regional on Oct. 22 and is ranked No. 55 in the ITA preseason rankings and became the first Sun Devil to qualify for the NCAA Singles Tournament since 2021, set to take place Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.

Sara Svetac and Patricija Spaka will be playing in the ITA West Sectional championships in Los Angeles hosted by USC starting on Nov. 7. Svetac will be playing in the singles draw as well in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship while both Spaka and Svetac will be paired in doubles attempting to qualify for the NCAA doubles championship.

Along with Tverijonaite’s singles title at the USTA SoCal collegiate championships in September, the doubles pair of Patricija Spaka and Sara Svetac won the doubles title in San Diego. Head coach Jamea Jackson’s team has also gone an impressive 10-2 in 3-set matches this fall.
