Women’s Tennis Receives Spring First Loss


COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Arizona was swept 4-0 by No. 20 Florida in round one of the ITA Kickoff on Sunday, Jan. 29 after heavy rain caused many schedule delays. 

It was a quick doubles match this afternoon where the Gators took the point. Kayla Wilkins and Reece Carter were defeated 6-1 by No. 58 doubles pair Rachel Gailis and Bente Spee at two doubles, followed by a 6-2 loss on court one in Florida’s favor. Salma Ziouti and Parker Fry lost to Carly Briggs and Alicia Dudeney in the No. 1 doubles lineup. However, Midori Castillo and Belen Nevenhoven held their own on court three and were tied 4-4 with Emma Shelton and Sophie Williams when doubles was clinched. 

Florida won their matches at one, four and five singles to finalize their spot in the ITA Kickoff Regional championship match. Freshman Carter only won a single game against Sara Dahlstrom, a junior from Stockholm. The Swede defeated the Canadian in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 on court four. Soon after, sophomore Fry was bested 6-4, 6-1 at five singles by Florida freshman Rachel Gailis. Clinching the match for the Gators was Carly Briggs who beat Castillo in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at one singles. 

 Kayla Wilkins played at three singles against No. 63 Anastasia Sysoeva. The senior Wildcat dropped her first set 6-1 and finished 3-5 against the freshman Gator. Tanvi Narendran battled Emily De Oliveira at six singles losing set one 6-4 but leading 3-1 in the second before Florida clinched. And at two singles was Ziouti versus Alicia Dudeney who beat the Wildcat 6-2 in set one. Ziouti was up 4-3 when the Gators won the match.
