EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 71-ranked Michigan State women’s tennis team has a B1G weekend slate ahead as it opens the Big Ten season on the road at Penn State Friday, March 15 at 12 p.m. The Spartans busy weekend will carry over to Saturday, March 16 when they face Youngstown State with action set to begin at 10 a.m. MSU will cap off the weekend at home on Sunday, March 17 in another B1G action against No. 11-ranked Ohio State inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Spartans moved to No. 71 in the ITA team rankings this week. The squad has been in the rankings for four weeks in a row. In the most recent doubles rankings, graduate Nicole Conard and senior Ayshe Can enters the week as the No. 38-ranked doubles tandem, moving up six spots from the previous rankings.
SPARTANS ON PACE
Michigan State currently boasts an 8-5 overall record. With a win this weekend, the Green and White will match its win total from the 2022-2023 season with nine more dual matches after the weekend.
SPARTANS VS. NITTANY LIONS
Friday’s match will be the 37th all-time meeting between the Spartans and Nittany Lions. Penn State leads the all-time head-to-head series 14-22. In last year’s meeting, MSU snapped a four-game losing skid defeating the Nittany Lions in East Lansing, 4-3.
SPARTANS VS. PENGUINS
The Spartans and the Penguins will meet for the first time in program history. Youngstown State sits with a 2-10 overall record; its last win was 4-3 against Bowling Green on Feb. 11.
SPARTANS VS. BUCKEYES
Sunday’s match will be the 57th all-time meeting between the two programs, Ohio State leads the series 41-15, including winning the last nine meetings.
In the latest ITA single rankings, the Buckeyes have two individuals in the top 60. Irina Cantos Siemer is No. 12 and Luciana Perry enters at No. 55. In doubles, Ohio State has four duos in the rankings: No. 28 Perry and Sydni Ratliff, No. 32 Perry and Cantos Siemers, No. 56 Audrey Spencer and Perry, and No. 80 Cantos Siemers and Ratliff.
