Raleigh, N.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis will continue fall action this weekend, heading to Raleigh, N.C., to compete in the NC State Ranked +1. Matches will take place at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center and at the Cary Tennis Park.
The Ranked +1 aims to highlight the top players in the country with a total of 39 competitors in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings plus three of the nation’s Top-10 newcomers competing in the draw.
This tournament will provide all players with an opportunity to play five singles matches and three doubles matches. Singles entries will be split between the A-1 and A-2 compass draws with each draw containing 32 players. Remaining singles entrants will compete in a round robin event.
Along with South Carolina and host NC State, other participating schools include Arizona State, Auburn, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Southern California, Virginia, and UCF.
The Ranked +1 will begin on Thursday, September 21, with two rounds of doubles action. Friday and Saturday will each see two rounds of singles play, and Sunday will conclude with one round of doubles followed by one round of singles.
Live scoring and streaming will not be available for this event. Results will be shared on GamecocksOnline.com at the conclusion of each day of play.
Keeping up with the Gamecocks
The Gamecocks All-American pair of Ayana Akli and Sarah Hamner will see their first action of the 2023-24 season this weekend. The duo, ranked No. 10 in the ITA Doubles Preseason Ranking, will face a tough challenge in their first doubles matchup, facing North Carolina’s Reece Brantmeier and Carson Tanguilig.
Brantmeier and Tanguilig, both also doubles All-Americans, competed against each other in the 2023 NCAA Doubles title match in May. Tanguilig and partner Fiona Crawley came out on top of the title with Brantmeier and partner Elizabeth Scotty finishing as runner-up.
South Carolina will also send the pair of Elise Mills and Shahar Biran to compete in the doubles draw. The duo saw their first action together this past weekend at the Furman Fall classic where they went 1-2. They will face Miami’s Isabella Pfennig and Antonia Balzert in their first round of action.
In singles, No. 7 Akli and No. 25 Hamner will be in the A-1 draw while No. 106 Biran and Mills will be in the A-2 draw. Junior Misa Malkin will compete in the round robin event.
