Women's Tennis Falls in Road Finale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.  Michigan State women’s tennis concluded its Big Ten regular season road slate, falling to No. 47 Purdue, 4-2, at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops MSU to 8-12 (1-8 Big Ten) while Purdue moves to 13-6 (4-4 Big Ten) this spring.

The Spartans came out swinging in the doubles portion as the duo of Dagmar Zdrubecka and Juliette Nask earned their second win of the season as a pair, dispatching Purdue’s Juana Larranaga and Kennedy Gibbs 6-2 to give MSU an early advantage. Purdue, however, would strike back with a win at No. 2 doubles as Csilla Fodor and Carmen Gallardo Guevara took down MSU’s pairing of Marley Lambert and Liisa Vehvilainen, 6-4. The Boilermakers would ultimately take the doubles point as Spartans Nicole Conard and Issey Purser could not hold off Purdue’s Liz Norman and Tara Katarina Milic, falling 7-5 as Purdue claimed the first point of the dual.

The singles portion started off with a bang as both squads would trade victories at the No. 6 and No. 5 singles positions. In a tough bout at No. 6 singles, Spartan Tia Mukherkjee fell to Purdue’s Larranaga, 3-6, 1-6, while at No. 5 singles, MSU’s Zdrubecka would put the Spartans on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Purdue’s Milic for her second singles win of the season.

Purdue would move closer to victory with a win at No. 2 singles as MSU’s Lambert fell to Fodor 2-6, 3-6 as Purdue opened up a 3-1 lead. At No. 4 singles, MSU’s Nask earned her second-straight win, defeating Purdue’s Gibbs 6-4, 6-1 to bring the Spartans within striking distance. However, the Boilermakers would quell any comeback attempt at No. 3 singles as Guevara defeated MSU’s Purser in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, giving Purdue the 4-2 win. At No. 1 singles, MSU’s Vehvilainen was tangled with Purdue’s Norman in a match that went unfinished after completing the second set.
