Women’s Tennis Drops Dual to Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, Nj. – The Michigan State women’s tennis team opened it B1G road slate against Rutgers on Friday afternoon dropping the dual, 4-0.

The Spartans dropped to 9-8 overall and drop to 0-3 in Big Ten play. The Scarlet Knights improve to 10-5 overall and nabbed their first B1G victory of the season.

In doubles action, the Green and White fought tough on courts two (6-3) and three (7-5) but would drop both matchups. The No. 37 nationally ranked tandem of senior Ayshe Can and graduate Nicole Conard were in a 6-6 battle before going unfinished.

Rutgers momentum would carry over on the singles court with the Scarlet Knights taking courts one (6-0, 6-2), four (6-2, 6-2) and six (6-2, 6-4) in straight sets to clinch the dual victory.

Freshman Ria Bhakta was making a statement on the number three court beating Jackeline Lopez, 6-1, 5-2 before going unfinshed.

Michigan State will be back in action on Sunday, March 24 as it faces Maryland at College Park. Action begins at noon.
