Wildcats Get Their First Win of the Last Pac-12 Season


LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The Wildcats celebrate their first win of their last PAC-12 conference play. After heading to the west coast Clancy Shields celebrated their first win against USC after becoming head coach. Arizona puts up a 4-0 victory against Southern California.
 
The Cats were off to a strong start as this opened the first weekend of the PAC-12 conference season. No.24 Colton Smith and Jay Friend secured the win on court one for Arizona to start off the match. Herman Hoeyeraal and Eric Padgham clinched the doubles point putting Arizona at a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
 
As the Wildcats head into their last season, they hope to go in with a strong record as back-to-back PAC-12 regular season titles. Arizona will fight hoping to make it back to the Sweet Sixteen and their title before transitioning into the BIG 12.
 
The other three points flowed in for the Cats in straight sets and two ranked victories. No.97 Hoeyeraal was the first to extend the lead for Arizona taking down Karl Lee 6-2, 6-3. No.80 Gustaf Strom secured a 3-0 lead putting up a ranked win over No.122 Lodewijk Westsstrate 6-2, 6-3. Captain No. 14 Colton Smith giving Arizona a huge start to their regular season in a 4-0 victory dominating court one over No.73 Peter Makk 6-3, 7-5.
 
The Wildcats will hope to continue the streak as they stay in Los Angeles, but head to the home of the Bruins. Tomorrow, Saturday 23, at 12:00 PM MST Arizona takes on No.24 UCLA.
