YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Michigan State women’s tennis team got back in the win column in its final non-conference matchup against Youngstown State, 4-1, Saturday morning.
The Spartans improved to 9-6 on the season, tying last season’s win total with 10 duals remaining. The Penguins drop to 3-11 overall.
“After not getting the job done at Penn State, we needed to regroup and fight for today’s win,” said head coach Kim Bruno. “It wasn’t pretty, but fighting and gutting out tough moments never are. This was a good reset heading into tomorrow’s Big Ten matchup.”
The Green and White began the dual against Youngstown State by securing the doubles point. On the top court, graduate Nicole Conard paired with sophomore Issey Purser who made her doubles debut on the number one court, knocked off the Penguins pairing of Maria Oliveira and Eliska Masarikova, 6-3.
On court three, sophomores Marley Lambert and Matilde Morais teamed up for the second time this season and have won for the second time. The Spartan duo edged YSU pair of Line Greyling and Elinor Beazley, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
The team momentum would carry over on one-on-one action with straight set wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. Morais defeated Masarikova, 6-1, 6-1, on the top court for the first singles victory, followed by Purser edging Lorena Cedano, 6-4, 6-0.
The dual-sealing point came on the No. 6 court. Lambert a native of Corona, California, loss in the opening set 7-6 [7-4] to Yeseniia Ovcharova. Lambert battled back and took over the last two sets 6-2, 6-1.
