MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis made its way into Sunday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Middle Tennessee.
The No. 64 ranked duo of senior Bridget Stammel and sophomore Valeria Ray opened the day for the Commodores against Tennessee State’s Francisca Gomez-Weiss and Warona Mdlulwa. Stammel and Ray cruised to an 8-3 victory over the Tigers. The pair then faced Elizabeth Lila and Alice Otis of Louisville for the doubles round of 16 later in the afternoon. Stammel and Ray continued to make winning plays when needed, and the Dores secured a trip to the doubles quarterfinals with an 8-4 victory.
In singles, Vanderbilt saw much of the same success. Stammel, the No. 2 singles seed in the tournament, defeated Xavier’s Abigail Siminsky 6-3, 6-1. Ray also took care of business against a Musketeer, handling Abby Nugent in a 6-2, 6-4 win. Freshman Sophia Webster claimed a match victory over Indiana’s Nicole Teodosescu 6-4, 6-2. Fellow freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar fell just short of yet another singles win at the regional, outlasted 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a conference contest against Zoe Hammond of Kentucky.
The Commodores are set to begin singles play on Sunday at 9 a.m. CT: Webster matches up against East Tennessee State’s Daniela Rivera, No. 34 Stammel draws Sofiia Paladi of Lipscomb, and Ray plays Tennessee’s Yilin Yan. The doubles quarterfinals will follow at 3 p.m., with Stammel and Ray taking on more Tennessee opponents: Conley Raidt and Sami Yli-Piipari. Stammel eliminated Raidt from singles play in the first round of the main draw, downing the Volunteer 6-4, 6-2 on Friday.
