SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women’s tennis head coach Ric Mortera has announced the signing of Katya Townsend for the 2022-23 season. Townsend is a graduate transfer from Texas A&M.
“This is an exciting day for our program, as we went through the recruiting process with Katya, it became very apparent why she has had such a successful career so far,” Head Coach Ric Mortera stated. “We are not only getting a great player, but an outstanding person who embodies a lot of the characteristics that we hope for in our program. I strongly believe the best is yet to come for Katya, and we are looking forward to helping her achieve her goals.”
Townsend comes to the University of Utah after a successful four-year career at Texas A&M. During her career at Texas A&M. She collected All-SEC Second Team honors, SEC All-Freshman Team, SEC All-Tournament Team, ITA Texas Region Player to Watch. She was also successful off the court, as she earned ITA Scholar-Athlete and SEC Academic Honor roll. She has been ranked 12 times in the ITA rankings, nine singles, and three doubles.
Over her four years as an Aggie, Townsend went 63-37 in singles, including 13 ranked wins over her career. During the 2019 season, Townsend defeated third-ranked singles player Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt. During her senior season, Townsend defeated No. 117 Ania Hertel of Georgia. She ranked as high as 28th in the ITA singles rankings over her career. During her time with the Aggies, she qualified for the NCAA Individual Singles Tournament and advanced to the second round.
In doubles, Townsend went 40-29 with three ranked victories. She teamed up with Renee McBryde and earned three wins, with two coming over the 51st-ranked team. The duo defeated Camila Romero and Martina Capurro of Oklahoma and a month later defeated Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt.
Before enrolling at Texas A&M, she was tabbed a blue-chip prospect by TennisRecruiting.net, placing as the No. 21 overall player in the 2018 senior class.
