SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women’s tennis head coach, Ric Mortera, has officially announced the signing of Kat Lyman. She is set to join the Utes for the 2023-24 season.
“We are thrilled to have Kat joining our family,” stated head coach Ric Mortera. “She is someone who has a tremendous work ethic and strong character, and she will be a great fit here. She has really developed her game throughout the years, and we are honored that she has chosen to finish her college career as a Ute; we can’t wait to have her on campus.”
Lyman comes to Utah as a graduate transfer from Xavier University, where she helped lead them to two conference championships and NCAA births. During the 2022 season, Lyman and her primary partner, Anna Smith, kept a stellar doubles record, going 7-2. She was again able to assist in another Conference Championship win after clinching her doubles match, alongside Smith, over DePaul. Lyman won 11 of her matches in singles, boosting her career wins to 31-13.
Lyman assisted Xavier to a 17-4 2021 spring season, with them going completely undefeated in the Big East. She played mainly in the No. 2 singles position, where she went 13-4 overall. During that season, she clinched the Big East Championship for Xavier after winning a pivotal match against DePaul. Along with her successes in singles, Lyman and her doubles partner, Kaitlin Ruether, played mainly at the No.2 position, where they won 7 of their 10 matches. She also ranked as high as #123 in singles by the ITA.
Before Xavier, Lyman was able to collect 11 wins in both singles and doubles, despite the season being shortened due to the pandemic while she attended West Virginia.
She was a four-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, ranking as high as #26 in the country. She played for Jeff Wilson at Oceanside Collegiate Academy in Mount Pleasant, S.C., and was named the 2019 South Carolina Player of the Year.
