RALEIGH Even though it wasn’t typical outdoor tennis weather, the NC State team brought the heat against Elon.
The Wolfpack didn’t show any sign of a long layoff, defeating the Phoenix, 5-2.
Sunday’s outdoor match was one last tune up before NC State dips into ACC play next weekend. With the win, NC State improves to 6-4 on the season.
Doubles (NC State 1, Elon 0)
NC State’s Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek got the Pack off to a good start, pulling away from Ben Zipay and Ahmed Hosni on court three. The Wolfpack duo of Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli, ranked No. 50 in the country, wrapped up the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court 2.
No. 39 Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Joe Wayand didn’t complete their match against Daniel Martin and Nicolas Campbell.
Singles (NC State 4, Elon 2)
Van Sambeek and Braden Shick didn’t waste any time during singles action, finishing their matches in dominating fashion.
Shick took care of Veljko Krstic, 6-0, 6-1 and spent the rest of the day as a spectator. Not too long after, Van Sambeek finished off Oskar Antinheimo with an identical 6-0, 6-1 score.
The next few matches didn’t go as easy for the Pack, but they built a 5-0 lead, thanks to sweeps by Wayand (6-1, 6-3) and Catry (6-3, 6-2).
The main attractions were courts 1 and 2, where each match ended in 10-point tiebreakers in favor of Elon.
