Wisconsin defeated by Nebraska, 6-1

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Wisconsin men’s tennis team (1-15, 0-3 Big Ten) lost to the No. 65-ranked Cornhuskers (11-7, 1-2 B1G), 6-1, in its match Saturday, Mar. 30 inside the Dillon Tennis Center. 

With Gabriel Huber back in action, the Badgers had a healthy six players to face the Cornhuskers. Michael Minasyan/Gabriel Huber battled Calvin Mueller/Johann Lars at the No. 1 doubles match, the duo’s first match together in the 2023-24 season. The Badgers won this match, 6-4, but soon after Collin Beduhn/Matthew Fullerton lost to Nic Wiedenhorn/Leo Linquet at the No. 3 match. This left Jason Hildebrandt/Tomas Zlatohlavek’s No. 2 match as the one to decide the team that won the doubles point. The match entered a seven-point tiebreak, but ultimately Nebraska’s Anton Shepp/Sunya Maruyama won the match, 7-6 (7-4), and claimed the first point of the match. 

The first four singles matches all belonged to Nebraska in straight sets, with Zlatohlavek, Huber, Hildebrandt, and then Minasyan unable to overcome the Cornhuskers. The final two matches of the day between Fullerton and Maruyama at match No. 3 and Beduhn and Johann at No. 4 were prolonged, with each heading into a third set to determine the winner. After dropping the first set 3-6, Beduhn battled back to take the second set 6-3 before eventually losing 3-6 in the third. The final match came down to Fullerton, who claimed the sole victory for the Badgers. He was behind, 5-7, early on, but won the remaining two sets, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3).
