CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – With two more wins Saturday, Cooper Williams put a statement on his run at the ITA Sectional Championship, qualifying for the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship. Williams won his quarterfinal singles match and semifinal doubles match with Theo Winegar to qualify for the main fall event in both.
Williams, the No. 2 seed in the singles bracket, downed Ioannis Xilas of Wake Forest 7-5, 6-3. With the first set tied 3-3, Xilas broke, but Williams broke right back to even the set at 4-4. It was tied at 5-5, but Williams captured the last two to take the set. The second set was a similar story with a 3-3 tie before Williams ripped off three straight to win the match.
In doubles, Williams and Winegar took down North Carolina’s Patrick Schoen and Logan Zapp, 6-3, 6-3. Much like Williams’ singles match, the doubles’ first set featured a 3-3 tie before a Duke run of three consecutive games ended the set. The second set had Duke go up a break to turn a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 advantage. The Tar Heel pair never got closer than 4-3 the remainder of the set before the Blue Devils secured the victory.
