TUCSON, Ariz.– The Wildcats defended their home courts after two amazing wins on a doubleheader weekend. The Cats took down their opponents putting up a 7-0 win against Western Michigan and a 6-1 victory over Nevada.
The morning started off great for Arizona as they secured the doubles point against Western Michigan. Court two was the first to finish as Kayla Wilkins and Teja Tirunelveli earned a 6-2 win. Court one secured the doubles point for Arizona as Belen Nevenhoven and Martyna Ostryzgalo defeated their opponents 6-2.
All singles matches were played out. Midori Castillo-Meza was the first to extend the lead for Arizona with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Following shortly after was Tanvi Narendran with another straight-set victory for the Cats 6-1, 6-1. Finishing third was Senior Kayla Wilkins on court one with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Martyna Ostryzgalo put another point on the board for Arizona after a 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 win. Karissa Ghigiarelli competed in her first collegiate match and defeated her opponent 4-6, 6-2, 10-6. Teja Tirunelveli topped off the 7-0 win with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
In their afternoon match Nevada gained a lead over Arizona when they earned the doubles point with both tie-breaker matches.
Ostryzgalo tied up the score with Nevada after a shutout match defeating Anastasia Luneva 6-0, 6-0. Reece Carter gained the Wildcats the lead over the Wolf Pack with a straight-set win 6-2, 6-2. Castillo extended the lead 3-1 with another straight set for the Cats 6-4, 6-0. Arizona obtained their second win of the day when Tirunelveli dominated her court 6-3, 6-4. Narendran and Wilkins complete the single wins for Arizona winning 6-2, 6-3 and 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.
The Wildcats are back at LaNelle next weekend taking on Cal and Stanford. Friday, March 8 at 1:30 PM MST Arizona takes on Cal. Saturday, March 9 at 12:00 PM MST they will take on Stanford.
