Phoenix, Ariz. – Arizona ended their first day of spring season with a doubleheader sweep. The Cats went two for two today against UC San Diego and GCU, taking both doubles points and a total of eight singles points. They now hold a record of 2-0 heading into their next match.
Arizona was quick to earn both doubles points. Doubles pair Belen Nevehoven and Midori Castillo dominated, winning both doubles matches 6-4 against UC San Diego and 6-3 against GCU. Brandelyn Fulgenzi and Lauren Friedman secured the doubles point for the morning match-up with a 6-1 victory. Canadian duo Martyna Ostrzygalo and Reece Carter earned Arizona the doubles point 7-5 win to start the afternoon.
The Wildcats swept both UC San Diego and GCU in singles clinching after receiving the next three singles points. Castillo, Tanvi Narendran, and Kayla Wilkins obtained the six singles points that lead to Arizona’s 4-0 victories in both matches. The Cats completed each match in straight sets. Senior Kayla Wilkins secured the first victory 6-3, 6-1 and contributed a third point in her second match 6-3, 6-4.
Arizona got it done in straight sets on courts four, five and six to finalize their second win of the day against GCU. Tanvi finished first taking the initial singles point against the Antelopes. Wilkins claimed the next point on court six and Castillo clinched on court five.
Next up the Cats are back home at LaNelle Friday, Jan. 19th and Saturday, Jan. 20th. They will host BYU, Michigan State, and Missouri this weekend. Arizona will compete Friday at 2:00 p.m. (MST) and 5:00 p.m. (MST). They will continue the following day at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
