TUCSON, Ariz. – #43 Arizona fell 1-4 to #53 Oregon in their first PAC-12 match and first loss at home on Friday, March 3 where freshman Reece Carter won one singles point and the team dropped the doubles point.
It was a fierce doubles competition against the Ducks, the Wildcats dropped the point, as it came down to court one between Reece Carter and Belen Nevenhoven against Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral.
Midori Castillo-Meza and Salma Ziouti finished first on court two, falling 2-6 to Jo-Yee Chan and Ares Teixido Garcia. At court three, Parker Fry and Kayla Wilkins leveled the playing field against Oregon’s Misaki Kobayashi and Myah Petchey winning 6-3.
In singles play, each Wildcat went to three competitive sets during the three and a half hour match where Carter tied the overall score after her win at two singles versus Ares Teixido Garcia. The Canadian won her first set 6-1 before falling 3-6 in the second then recovered beating Garcia 6-2.
Oregon clinched the match after Martinez Moral defeated Wilkins at four singles in three competitive sets where she lost 3-6 in the first, then fought to win 7-6(4) and ultimately fell 6-2 in the third. Midori Castillo completed a grueling two sets against Myah Petchey at three singles before the match was called in the Ducks favor. She fell 4-6 in the first set and won a thrilling tie-breaker 7-6(11-9) in the second pushing her to a third.
The Wildcats are now 0-1 in conference play and 10-6 overall. They remain at home for their next three matches against #51 Pennsylvania on Thursday, March 9 at 2 p.m., and a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 14 vs. #27 Illinois at 10 a.m. followed by New Mexico State at 5 p.m.
