Wildcats Dominate Season Opener – University of Arizona Athletics

TUCSON, Ariz. – No.16 Arizona put on an amazing performance for their season opener with a 7-0 and 6-1 win against UC San Diego. Dominating the courts by putting up both doubles points and winning all their singles matches in straight sets. 

The morning matches started off strong as doubles pairs No. 11 Colton Smith/Jay Friend and No.36 Gustaf Strom/Sasha Rozin put up 6-3 victories against UC San Diego. Momentum continued as the Cats gained the next six points for Arizona in straight-sets. 

The Wildcats came back strong in the afternoon matches as they swept the Tritons with three victories in doubles. After putting the doubles point on the board, Arizona earned the next five in straight-set wins. Casper Christensen secured the final point defeating Zach Pellouchoud 6-2, 6-2. 

Arizona now stands at a 2-0 record to start the spring season. The Wildcats prepare for a showdown against No. 25 Baylor on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. (MST) at the LaNelle Robson Center.
